How to Switch Off HP Auto-Updates
HP's aggressive firmware update policies have long frustrated consumers, and in 2025, the issue continues to be a hot topic. These updates are designed to block third-party cartridges, forcing users to purchase expensive HP-branded ink and toner. If you're tired of being locked into HP's ecosystem, here’s how you can take control and avoid unnecessary costs.
Why HP Firmware Updates Are Problematic
HP markets its firmware updates as "security features," but their real purpose often lies in restricting consumer choice. Here’s what these updates do:
Block Compatible Cartridges: HP firmware updates frequently disable third-party or remanufactured cartridges, even if they were previously working perfectly.
Force OEM Purchases: By locking out alternatives, HP pushes customers to buy their overpriced cartridges.
Lack of Transparency: Many users unknowingly accept updates that alter printer functionality without clear warnings about the consequences.
For example, HP's 2024 firmware update for its 67 and 305 series cartridges caused widespread backlash by blocking non-HP cartridges. This practice has led to legal challenges and growing consumer frustration.
The Cost of Staying Locked In
OEM cartridges from HP can cost up to 50-70% more than high-quality compatible options. For businesses or frequent home users, this adds up quickly. By disabling automatic firmware updates, you can continue using affordable, reliable third-party cartridges that deliver comparable performance at a fraction of the cost.
How to Turn Off Automatic Firmware Updates
1. Click on the dark blue bar at the top (the one with a setup sign, Wi-Fi sign and an ink drop).
2. A new menu appears. Click on Setup at the top left of the menu.
3. The configuration menu will open. Scroll down to Printer Maintenance.
4. Click on Printer Maintenance and then on Update the Printer.
5. Choose Printer Update options and then Do Not Check.
6. Press NO when asked if you want to turn on Printer Updates.
Going forward HP will not be able to alter your firmware and you can continue using Inkspot cartridges without any issues.
